I needed a good excuse to practice and test manual masking and green screen keying in FCPX (Final Cut Pro)
I’ve used trackx (in its free trial) before and it was good, but even though there is currently a bundle sale I can’t justify dropping nearly £300 on a bit of software that will strip me of the opportunity to roll my sleeves up and learn how to track and mask the hard way so I needed a small project i could bash out in about an hour that would combine some layer, green screen and masking work.
Given that the world is going mad aboutPokemon Go, what better subject to pick and play with.
Because of the augmented reality nature of Pokemon go an the fact that it can only be run on a mobile device, and the fact that I refuse to jailbreak my iPhone (if I did this I could probably record the screen internally), I had to tether my phone to my MacBook in order to record the screen live, then once a Pokemon appeared I had to point the lense at a green screen and hit record.
This isn’t my finest work (I doubt my finest work will even see light of day for some time – I’m still learning) but it gave me opportunity to be a bit resourceful in how I captured and cut the footage, taking out the game assets that I didn’t want and overlaying the after-shot assets that I did. Composition could have been better, I could have colour graded to achieve a more natural look between the assets but it was a “lunchtime” project that was designed to keep my hands in.
Hope you enjoy all 33 seconds of it!
