To start off, It’s important to note that I set about researching the “three footed” Manfrotto MVM500A monopod when considering a monopod purchase.
I wanted something that would give me a stable platform to shoot video from without the additional bulk and reduced mobility of a full-blown tripod (more on that in a moment)
Anyone that is looking to purchase either a monopod or a tripod quickly finds that there is as great difference in terms of pricing alongside the brand names that you may be aware of, the Manfrotto monopod was looking to cost in he region of £200 and the more reviews I read the most I came to the conclusion that the length of the feet was unlikely to offer the amount of set and forget stability was hoping for (and actually, on reflection I think a monopod – of any variety – won’t offer this comfort)
Searching YouTube I discovered the Sirui alternative, with longer feet, more options with regard to post angle and lock down, not to mention a significant saving over the Manfrotto equivalent I placed an order.
The overall build quality is very good, since receipt it’s been in the boot of my car (in the supplied bag) and used for both small scale commercial projects and family shots, it’s great to use for the creation of slider or jib effects and is light enough to carry comfortably.
What it isn’t however is a tripod, for run and gun work it’s an excellent tool and one I am happy to have at my disposal but even with only one section extended there is enough wobble to either ruin a shot or create fear of tipping and damaging your attached equipment.
Basically, it’s a hands in platform, I wouldn’t advise loading this up with a heavy camera and walking away, if you’re just looking to set and forget then give second thought to a bonafide tripod, if however you want to experiment with different camera movements or attempt some more creative compositions whilst still retaining control and reducing shake this is a great peice of kit.
Sirui P-204S – A prompt unboxing to show how the monopod arrives from China, the packaging and general quality is impressive, I have no doubt this will hold up very well.
[UPDATE] I’ve since put a Manfrotto MVH500AH fluid head on top of this Monopod, these 2 combined make for some excellent shot! [/UPDATE]
